Bobby Zhu '09 wins Top Scholar award at Princeton
Young alumnus Chengming "Bobby" Zhu '09 brought great distinction to the School by being honored with the Freshman First Honor Prize for the Class of 2013 at Princeton University. The Freshman First Honor Prize is awarded each year to a sophomore in recognition of exceptional academic achievement in the work of the freshman year. This year the prize was shared by Bobby Zhu and Irene Lo.
Head of School Malcolm McKenzie announced the news at a faculty meeting, saying that he had received a letter from the Dean at Princeton about Bobby's award, and that this honor carried with it a check for $350 for the School to purchase books for the Edsel Ford Memorial Library.
A native of Shanghai, China, Zhu studied in the Hotchkiss Summer Portals environmental science program and won the First Scholar Prize at Hotchkiss. In his upper-mid year, he qualified for the 2008 USA Math Olympiad, the third level in the series of national math challenges called American Mathematics Competitions. The top 500 students of 400,000 students nationwide are invited for the USA Math Olympiad.
An A.B. candidate at Princeton, Zhu is considering a major in mathematics, with certificates in both finance and applied and computational mathematics. He received the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence for his freshman year and last summer participated in Princeton's Global Seminar in Vietnam.
